Saving animals might save people.

Just read "Best Friends Need Shelter too" at the Washington Post

Can't say I'm crying because of it.

I'm crying because of the pictures I saw on Yahoo yesterday and today.

I keep coming on pictures of those left behind in New Orleans. You know, the pets.

Especially dogs.

I'm not a dog person, but people in my family are so we have them. Just a short time living with dogs does make it hard to live without them, though (not to denigrate other pets, it's just that I haven't see any pictures of them lost and alone New Orleans).

You can see the fear and loneliness in the canines' eyes sitting on those rooftops or car tops, standing in muck, or swimming in the flood trying to reach help, abandoned by the world more than their owners who were forced to leave them.

They say that chimps are our closest relatives, and, evolutionarily, they are. But our pets are much closer. Dogs especially. We know their feelings and how they express their feelings. Great feelings can even be read by strangers, even as subtle as dog expressions are to us.

I would also like to say that rescuing pets in New Orleans, even by official rescue units, makes a great deal of sense. It keeps experienced rescuers around in case there is a great need for rapid response for the humans who have elected to stay.

Plus many of the people who have stayed behind cite the not being able to leave their pet(s). For some it is like leaving children behind, though understandably most families with children did evacuate even if forced to abandon pets.

LOL Don't you love the advertisers.

I don't mean the other real bloggers that leave a note and a link. That is honored tradition. The blogosphere is a very extended forum. I mean this(these) bot(s) that drops these faux comments.)

A real hoot.
