Bid to Block Bridge to Nowhere and Don Young's bridge spending blocked in Senate

Republicans in Congress say they are serious about cutting spending, but they learned yesterday to keep their hands off the "Bridge to Nowhere."

The Details.

Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) attempted to attach an amendment to the 2006 appropriations bill that would block the spending of $453 million for two Alaska bridges approved in the transportation bill passed this summer.

Sen Stevens (R-AK) whined about "discrimination".

Coburn proposed funding the Louisiana bridge for I10 over Lake Pochartrain instead of building the Alaskan bridges. According to the article, the people of Alaska agree and want the money shifted to the Louisiana bridge.

But the ammendment went down to defeat in the Senate.
